T’ai-chi ch’uan is known as the “supreme ultimate” marshall art, and the Chinese “exercise dance” that you see in parks around the world. Indeed, the same principles that make a T’ai-chi master profoundly effective in combat also make any of us more vibrantly alive and healthy. As simply a movement practice, the essence of T’ai-chi is accessible to anyone. Through the classic form we learn to move with a strong center and relaxed periphery, unfolding yin and yang (contracting and expanding energy) through each joint without strain. This helps keep our bodies limber, relaxed, and ready. With practice our movements become like a symphony, like water coursing and pooling through a stream channel, and a living expression of the Tao. Sessions will focus on building the classical form as a matter of cultivating energy and awareness (Qigong), but, depending on student interest, can also explore marshall aspects.
